The first version of Apple's set-top media box, the Apple TV, made a promising debut. But ultimately, it lacked the simplicity that consumers expected from a living-room technology. Additionally, it failed to take advantage of big-screen TVs and their accompanying bone-shaking audio systems by making it difficult to watch HD content and impossible to listen to surround sound. Not only did users have to accept these compromises, but they also had to understand the syncing-and-streaming relationship between the Apple TV and a network of computers scattered about the house. Beyond that, there remained the puzzle of getting content you owned onto the box.
