In September 2007, New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) published a widely publicized study called "Early Thimerosal Exposure and Neuropsychological Outcomes at 7 to 10 Years." William W. Thompson, PhD, from the Influenza Division and Immunization Safety Office, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Atlanta, GA) led the study, which involved 1047 children. The children and their mothers received their health care through one of four HMOs since the child's birth.
