ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Starting this week, oil shippers in Prince William Sound will send a second escort tug, along with a fully equipped spill-response vessel, to accompany each tanker carrying oil from the trans-Alaska pipeline, Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles said Wednesday.
The second tug is in addition to the pair of vessels mandated by state and federal laws passed after the Exxon Valdez disaster of 1989.
Knowles said the added tug to accompany each laden tanker is an "initial first step" while oil companies design new and more maneuverable tugs to improve tanker safety.
