Researchers said they have confirmed (http://www.reuters.com/article/governmentFilingsNews/idUSN2345672220080423?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0) the Food and Drug Administration's (http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/heparin/default.htm) suspicion that the contaminant found in the blood thinner heparin was oversulfated chondroitin sulfate, which is a derivative of a popular supplement used to relieve arthritis. It can resemble the active ingredient in heparin but is cheaper, making investigators think that it may have been deliberately substituted, Reuters reports.
