MORE damning revelations about security procedures at the Maze Prison emerged during the Billy Wright Inquiry in Banbridge this week.

Former prison officer Raymond Mitchell - who worked on H Block 6 at the Maze between 1995 and 1998 - said the decision to allow prisoners unrestricted access to their cells on a 24-hour basis and the withdrawal of prison staff from the wings had made the Maze 'a scary place to work' in 1997 - the year of Wright's murder by the INLA.

He said the degree of staff control within the Maze prison was completely dependent upon prisoner compliance.
