To a few tears but to widespread relief, Speaker Newt Gingrich has announced that he will not be running for president after all _ at least not in 1996. It was a good thing for the country that his announcement came when it did. The suspense was getting excruciating.
Speaker Gingrich, who seems to be staging a press conference every 30 minutes or so about something or other (usually about Newt Gingrich), may be the most entertaining politician since Caligula. He knows what he wants and usually gets what he wants, which in Washington is quite a feat.
He seems to have the Capitol Hill press corps jumping through hoops, trying to keep up with his sweaty ...
