NOT A COUNTRY prone to outbursts of humility, the USA's Olympics sports machine is nevertheless offering a rare nervous cough and lowered glance regarding the next big test, the Summer Games.
Apparently, we're about to get our five-ring patooties kicked in Beijing. And not just because ex-sprint champion Marion Jones is fashioning license plates in the big house.
"We're making no illusions that we believe the Chinese have the strongest team," Jim Scherr, CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee, told reporters in Chicago last week at a pre-games media summit. "We are trying to manage expectations."
