Shortages: IMF and World Bank to take charge.(Business Report Weekend)

World Bank president Robert Zoellick this week welcomed the Japanese prime minister's announcement that he intended to put the food crisis on the agenda of the Group of Eight industrial nations' (G8) summit in July.

Japan is the chair of the G8 and therefore Yasuo Fukuda will preside over the meeting.

Fukuda was responding to a request by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who called for a co-ordinated response led by the UN, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to address soaring food prices.

In his letter to Fukuda, Brown said that for the first time in decades, the number of people facing hunger was growing. ...
