TRADERS in Spen will be provided with reusable bags as part of a campaign to cut the number of plastic bags issued in the area.
The Spen Valley Area Committee has agreed to spend council funds on providing the bags to any businesses that want them.
The project has won the support of Spenborough Chamber of Trade, but traders are reluctant to give up plastic bags altogether.
Coun Andrew Pinnock, who is driving the campaign, said 100 million plastic bags were used in Kirklees each year, leaving a trail of waste and pollution.
