Sharp rise in life-sentence prisoners
There has been a huge increase in the number of prisoners in Irish jails serving life sentences.
Since 1998, Irish prisons have seen a dramatic 150 per cent rise in the numbers serving life sentences, from 98 then to 250 in March of this year.
This increase is due in no small measure to the rise in gang-related murders on Irish streets over the last decade.
During Dail questions in December 2007, Brian Lenihan, the Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform, revealed that the average duration of a life prisoner's sentence was 13 years. "All prisoners who are serving life sentences are eligible to have their cases ...
