THE RNLI's plans to introduce a new class of all-weather lifeboat to replace the aging Mersey Class have suffered a major setback.
During ongoing trials, problems with the design of the hull on the new experimental Fast Carriage Boat 2 (FCB2) lifeboat were identified which will considerably delay its introduction which was scheduled for 2010.
First introduced in 1988, the RNLI has three Mersey Class all-weather lifeboats from its fleet currently based in Northumberland at Amble, Seahouses and Berwick, which were introduced in 1999, 1991 and 1993 respectively.
