COACH: You were born in Lebanon, OR, in 1957 and grew up in Southern California. What was your childhood like? How did you pass the time as a youth?

HOWLAND: I had a great childhood. I spent a lot of my youth in Santa Barbara and Goleta, CA. I grew up playing basketball at the Goleta Boys Club, which is where I fell in love with the game of basketball. During that same time, I was watching the UCLA games that were replayed at night on television. That was the era of the great John Wooden teams.
