In the 23rd century, engineers aboard Baseball Planet developed cloning to produce cheap, obedient, baseball players. Clones get no pay. Thus, the entrepreneurs' single-minded pursuit of profit led to great technological advance.
Clones replicate the original baseball player in physical appearance, behavior, and "character." As a result, hundreds of Cal Ripken clones break Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games, and take a modest victory lap in the middle of the 5th inning (replicated Camden [Yards.sup.september 6, 1995]).
