A critical reading looks at the allegory of fear that serves as themes and leitmotiv in Luisa Valenzuela's works. Several of her short stories are analyzed to reveal how she objectified and subjectified fear and its sources. For Valenzuela, memory is a means of overcoming fear and for memory to last, it must be written. Paradoxically, fear is necessary in reconstructing as well as in writing about the past.
