ORLANDO -- Deep breathing, guided imagery, passive muscle relaxation, and other coping strategies can help patients on dialysis overcome needle phobia, Gary Petingola reported at a meeting sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation.
In a study with 25 participants, the use of such relaxation techniques diminished their anxiety and fear of needles, and improved their ability to sleep, said Mr. Petingola, a renal social worker at Sudbury (Ont.) Regional Hospital.
He offered training in relaxation therapy to 25 individuals, including 21 patients who were on dialysis or who were kidney transplant recipients, 3 family members, and 1 health care provider.
