The hegemony of Western categorisation and the underdevelopment of children's literature in 'other' worlds.(Report)

This paper seeks to explore some problems relating to academic research in children's literature as faced by graduate students and scholars in Taiwan, to discuss the extent to which the development of children's literature in other countries may be dependent on Western modes of though, to explain some of the causes of this phenomenon, and to suggest a few approaches for a healthier and more balanced development in global children's literature studies. I apply perspectives (and metaphors) from the field of sociology of development to argue that scholarship is dominated by Western nations, whose cultural products represent hegemony.
