Zitha Mabuza, Phillip Simongo and Oupa Sithole escaped a life sentence for gang-raping a child - because they were between 18 and 20 at the time of the crime and grew up poor.
And the success of their appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein, which saw sentences reduced to 16 years, is not the exception, but the rule.
Now, because of an appeal brought by a man sentenced to life for raping an 11-year-old mentally disabled and epileptic girl, the Mabuza case ruling and seven other "aggravated rape" sentences given by the appeal court are under fire.
