A consortium of process control vendors and users that includes some large chemical companies says it will issue a final standard for field instrumentation communication early this year. Called the fieldbus standard, this protocol will allow digital instrumentation from a wide range of vendors to communicate on a single network that can be linked to the highest levels of a company's information technology (IT) system.
