In this day of academic hyper-specialization any serious effort to work the interface of fields and strategies of research deserves a sympathetic hearing. Scheff moves from individuals to group behavior, using a family systems model, on the assumption that the underlying dynamics of conflict are universal and that understanding a tiny marital battle will illuminate the causes of wars. He presents a clinical case illustration of the disruption in communications between a couple, to demonstrate what he terms a shame, humiliation, insult-revenge cycle. He views shame as the "master emotion" which, if unacknowledged, will fester and take over the conflict as the primary agenda. ...
