Transportation choice decisions have been the subject of empirical investigations since the early 1970s. Many of the earlier studies focused on broad transport choice issues, as exemplified by Stock and LaLonde's 1977 study of the important factors in modal selection.(1) In contrast, later research has become more specific in nature. Lambert, Lewis, and Stock's 1993 study of the important factors in selecting general commodity LTL carriers offers an example of this increasing specificity.(2)
