President Nelson Mandela's about face on Nigeria has given the lie to the much touted "neo-mercantilist" approach to international relations. This model, which has been championed vigorously by right-wing think tanks in the west, views the world as being driven only by economic factors. Matters such as the abuse of human rights, the lack of democracy, the degradation of the environment and the arbitrary whims of dictators are considered purely in economic terms. If they don't interfere with making a profit, ignore them, if they do, change them.
