The old vision of the 'locomotive approach' to development - with an economy pulled either by the sugar or textile sectors - is dead and buried according to the Mauritian Minister of Finance, Mr Ramakrishna Sithanen. Yet Government policies put in place to encourage diversification have given the textile industry an even more prominant place in the economy.
In 1994, textiles accounted for more than half of the country's total exports, and Central Statistical Office (CSO) projections suggest the total contribution of the sector to the economy in 1995, should reach 6.9bn Mauritian Rupees (MR), or 11.5% of GDP.
