ORLANDO -- Giving hemodialysis patients oral fish oil supplements boosts their red blood cell fatty acid levels and may afford them protection against cardiovascular disease by improving serum levels of cardiovascular risk markers, according to a poster presented at a meeting sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation.
Patients who received 1.3 g of fish oil per day for 12 weeks "dramatically" increased their serum levels of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 PUFA) eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA).
