The contribution of social support to well-being has been one of the major areas of psychological research during the last decade. Social support is a multidimensional construct that may be defined as the comfort, assistance, and/or information one receives through formal or informal social contacts (Wallston, Alagna, DeVellis, & DeVellis, 1983).
