Capping work should begin soon on a $55 million landfill remediation project in Ohio that Republic Services Inc. calls its largest ever.
The disposal of a byproduct of aluminum production called saltcake in six older disposal cells at the Countywide landfill near Canton in Stark County has elevated temperatures, and that in turn has sped decomposition of regular waste.
Republic has been dealing with the issue since it discovered the problem in 2005, and this month the company entered into an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that outlines how it will handle the problem.
