The Life and Times of George Van Den Heuvel 
 
   What ever happened to George Van den Heuvel, 
   carbuncled waiter extraordinaire 
   who hazed me relentlessly the year 
   I turned sixteen and took my first job as a waitress 
   at Le Bistro, Lubbock's only bona fide French cafe? 
 
   Why George Van den Heuvel proposed marriage 
   on my first day was never clear, nor why 
   he celebrated our engagement with bewildered customers 
   even after he took my no with grace 
   and offered me one year to change my mind. 
 
   Every day on every table I set a vase 
   that held a single carnation feathered pink with dye 
   and considered the criteria by which 
   I might determine ...
