ATTEMPTS to understand the nature and behaviour of the Earth's atmosphere face two major challenges.
One of these arises because we are dealing with a highly dynamic and complex fluid, of which we have only ever studied a very small part.
The second important challenge arises because of the dominant influence of the sun on our atmosphere, a subject which is far from easy to investigate.
These challenges mean that scientific understanding of our atmosphere, in common with most subjects, is in a state of flux.
