Article: Looking up: MTA wants future energy to include solar power.

In yet another example of the embracing of green technology, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has committed to using solar panels to help power its operations.

The authority announced last week it plans on deriving 7 percent of its energy needs from solar, wind and other renewable sources by 2015.

MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said solar power will cost more than the current practice of purchasing electricity from Con Ed--at least at first.

"The cost for solar remains relatively fixed, where there's an expectation that non-renewable will increase over time," he said. "So, you would see a savings in the long-term."
