The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among people with serious mental disorders who are taking antipsychotics is "alarmingly high," results of a study show.
In a cross-sectional study, the investigators found the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among this population was 27%, compared with 14.4% among patients not taking antipsychotics. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P less than .001).
The investigators noted that a growing number of reports have suggested that patients taking antipsychotics are prone to develop signs of metabolic syndrome.
