WORCESTER - A federal judge yesterday granted a preliminary injunction that will restrict TD Banknorth Inc. from using the name TD Commerce Bank in all or parts of Massachusetts.
Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV ruled from the bench in U.S. District Court on a case that Commerce Bank & Trust Co. of Worcester brought against TD Banknorth of Portland, Maine, and Commerce Bancorp Inc. of Cherry Hill., N.J. TD Banknorth completed its $8.5 billion purchase of Commerce Bancorp on March 31. In mid-March, the two banks announced plans to rename their combined company TD Commerce Bank.
