Contemporary cultural texts point towards the acknowledgment of complicity as a starting point for engagement with Others, with the world, readers, and histories that energize them. (1) Here I discuss the critical role that complicity (both as an act and as a concept) plays in drawing out the complex interrelationships between historical pasts and present. In terms of critique, the charge of complicity operates very powerfully as a critical accusation aimed at defeating the convictions of an unknowing text, and as such it has much in common with a deconstructive reading (Critchley).
