Argentina is likely as soon as next month to become the first Latin American country to import LNG. But Buenos Aires is paying dearly for the privilege, as it battles severe gas shortages and the prospect of rationing in the upcoming Southern Hemisphere winter months (WGI Apr.9,p4). The Argentine government has reportedly agreed to pay $14 per million Btu for the LNG, near the top of prices being paid for Atlantic Basin cargoes by more distant Japanese buyers.
