Ninety-two percent of all poisoning in children occurs within the child's own home, so it's a good idea for parents to take a few moments to assess how well they have "poison-proofed" their residence, says Lee McGoodwin, managing director of the Oklahoma Poison Control Center. They should begin with the basics: place child-resistant locks on cabinets containing household and cleaning products; keep all drugs, including over-the-counter medications and vitamins, out of reach of youngsters; and never encourage them to think of medication as candy.
