Long before Clinton's Assault Rifle Ban, politicians, elected and appointed officials, and the media had made the switch. Whether through ignorance or just plain lying on their part, so-called assault rifles became the whipping boy of the antigun crowd. Along the way the term "semi-" also was lost and they simply became automatic rifles.
