A report released Thursday by the Oregon State Public Interest Research Group highlights Eugene as one of 15 smaller cities across the country where motorists have saved big bucks at the gas pump by turning to public transit.

The report, "A Better Way to Go," estimates that Lane Transit District riders avoid buying nearly 564,000 gallons of fuel each year.

Those gallons amounted to nearly $1.5 million in gas savings in 2006, and more likely represent a savings of about $1.9 million at today's fuel prices, OSPIRG consumer associate Matt Wallace said at a news conference at LTD's downtown Eugene Station.
