I was out working in the lawn the other day and I saw a garter snake slipping through the grass in an attempt to avoid being raked. Did I scream? Did I run and get a shovel? No! Instead, I admired the snake's seemingly effortless movements and I felt joy in knowing there was one in my yard.

I have heard many stories of snakes found in yards and, unfortunately, far too many of them ended in, "So I killed it." I am greatly saddened every time I hear that particular ending, so in an effort to save as many of these wonderful animals as possible I am going to try to present snakes in the proper light.
