Manganese Metal Company (MMC), a local unit of BHP Billiton, is seeking duty-free treatment of refined manganese powder exports to the US because its production process is environmentally safer than that of Chinese competitors.
Increased environmental costs have resulted in capacity for electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) powder closing down in Japan, France and the US, leaving South Africa and China as the world's only exporters since 2002.
