The challenges posed by the future air navigation system are continuing to provoke major realignments in the avionics industry. The whole basis of air transport operations is moving from ground-based, line-of-sight communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) systems to the globally accessible satellite-based replacements that will pave the way for automated air traffic management (ATM). Behind the new vocabulary is a whole array of new technologies that will have to work together in new ways.
