DETROIT - Buick has a difficult mission for its 1997 Park Avenue: retain the cat's established, affluent owners while broadening its appeal to baby boomers and older buyers of the large Roadmaster, which will be dropped in 1996.

Buick unveiled its solution this month. The redesigned Park Avenue, which goes on sale next fall, takes a few styling cues from the Buick Riviera but avoids dramatic changes to the exterior. Instead, it relies on a host of comfort, safety and convenience improvements to attract new customers.
