John Van Benschoten could not have scripted a better first outing.
The big Indianapolis right-hander pitched 5 2/3 innings of hitless baseball against the Syracuse Chiefs Monday night at Alliance Bank Stadium and survived into the seventh to help the Indians defeat the Chiefs 5-1 in front of a paid crowd of 2,812.
"It felt pretty good today," Van Benschoten said. "I kind of felt it warming up in the bullpen that I was going to have a good fastball. Everything really just worked off my fastball. Fortunately, I was getting strike one with my fastball and that set up pretty much the whole game."
