Although this is just his second album--his debut was released in 1991--Ray Bierl is a veteran performer who began singing in west coast coffee houses in the 1960s. Later he did sideman duty with such artists as Malvina Reynolds, Kate Wolf and Rosalie Sorrels, before he moved on to playing in bluegrass bands. But as a featured performer on this completely enjoyable album, Bierl turns in fine versions of traditional folk songs, country music classics, a blues interpretation of an old Charlie Rich song (actually written by Rich's wife) and a nice folk-jazz ...
