STAFF at a day care centre for the elderly have celebrated its 30th birthday along with the councillor that helped stop it from closing.
Gainsborough Avenue Day Centre provides a lifeline to local elderly people, by providing entertainment, low cost meals and a place to socialise.
But the fate of the Whiteleas centre hung in the balance four years ago when council bosses re-evaluated how the centre should be run.
However, its members were given the opportunity to run the centre themselves, independently from the council, following a high-profile campaign from Whiteleas councillor Ernest Gibson.
