A case of bad gas.(READBACK)(Letter to the editor)

Question number one of the December 2007 quiz asked, "How long after topping off a fuel tank should one wait before sumping to check for water?" The answer given calculates this time as 11.25 minutes for a Cessna 172. Both theory and experiment show that this result is not valid in general.

Obviously, there is no point in sumping before the water reaches the sump. That time is critically dependent on the quantity of water in the tank and how water got into the tank. If a large amount of water is poured into an empty tank, it will show up immediately, but if there are only isolated drops embedded in gasoline, they will not reach the sump until the gasoline has been removed. ...
