A. Among the first elevated trains were those in this country built in the late 19th century. In 1875, the City of New York officially gave its approval for the building of the Second, Third and Sixth Avenue elevated lines in Manhattan. The Third Avenue El opened Aug. 26, 1878. It was built by the New York Elevated Railroad Co. On Feb. 25, 1879, the Sixth Avenue El opened. On March 1, 1880, the Second Avenue Elevated Line was up and running.
