PROVIDENCE, R.I. _ Disaster is everywhere in Chris Van Allsburg's living room. By the fireplace, the Titanic is going down. Near a wall, a monolithic pillar is tumbling, its cascade of bricks frozen in time. And alongside the Morris chair where the celebrated children's book artist and author can currently be found, a coffee cup is toppling, its splash of dark liquid suspended in mid-spill.
These pieces _ large-scale, whimsical creations in bronze and wood _ come from the days when Van Allsburg worked primarily in sculpture. They lend a surreal air to the tranquil, sunlit room here, with its old prints, Mission oak furniture, and Arts and Crafts wallpaper.
