As a high schooler in Dayton, Ohio, Anne Pramaggiore specialized in an obscure track and field event: race walking. She endured plenty of teasing from her classmates for the arm-swinging, jerky hip motion that had gotten her around the track fast enough to qualify for the Amateur Athlete Union nationals at age 13. But she kept at it for a simple reason: "You like to do things you do well,'' she says.
