Broward County, Fla., commissioners voted Tuesday to start negotiations for a long-term lease with basketball's Miami Heat and hockey's Florida Panthers, possible occupants of a proposed $212 million bond-financed arena.
Both teams currently play in the eight-year-old Miami Arena, but like many of their colleagues in professional sports, their respective owners want a more modern playing venue in south Florida.
Negotiations will begin immediately, county finance director Phillip Allen said after Tuesday's 5-to-1 commission vote. The county hopes to have two 20- year leases signed in four to six weeks.
