Although the history of the United States now spans over a 230-year time frame, the years between 1861 and 1864 continue to fascinate most Americans. Historian James McPherson (1990) claims the conflict between the Confederate and Union states is "a war that never goes away" in the hearts and minds of citizens because "it was the crucial test of the American nation."
