Quite a few scholars have emphasized the importance of Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence for Abraham Lincoln's political philosophy. Relatively few, however, have dug deeper and tied Lincoln to Jefferson himself, or Jefferson's ideas about moral philosophy; and almost no one has done so using religious thought and the nature of God as the primary vehicle for this connection.
