I take exception to Theresa Ruth Howard's February "Rant & Rave." While arguably the term "black dance" is "nebulous," that does not mean that it shouldn't be discussed or utilized. Howard's point that the term "black dance was not chosen by artists whose work it seeks to identify" ignores the fact that there were and are artists who subscribed to this definition, regardless of who coined the phrase.
In my opinion, no one would be worried about being "pigeonholed" as "black" unless it maintained a negative and limiting connotation in their minds. It's not the use of the term that sets us apart in the minds of "funders, critics, journalists, and presenters." It ...
